Live demo
First Shift
Paid one-day tryouts at small businesses near young South Africans. The business pays the same day, and the young person leaves with a verified reference for their CV. Built solo in 72 hours at the FNB App of the Year Hackathon 2026.
01 Problem
Five million young South Africans are unemployed. Almost six in ten have never worked. And every job asks for experience.
02 What I built
Paid one-day tryouts at small businesses near young people. The business pays the young person the same day, and they leave with a verified reference they can put on their CV.
03 My role
I built First Shift solo in 72 hours at the FNB App of the Year Hackathon 2026, in the Youth employment and work readiness track. It was submitted as team Showup.
04 How it works
- Next.js and TypeScript, with Firebase for sign-in, data and storage, and Claude Haiku for the AI.
- The AI drafts and classifies work. Code, not the model, enforces pay, safety and every status change.
- Security rules deny by default.
- ID numbers are stored only as a keyed hash and the last four digits.
05 Stack
- Next.js
- TypeScript
- Firebase
- Claude Haiku
06 Outcome
- Live at firstshiftza.netlify.app, with one-tap demo accounts.
- 744 unit tests and 26 security rules tests.
- 20 of 20 AI evaluation cases passed, including prompt-injection attempts.
- The full code is public on GitHub.
